NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
The Sedes Sapientaie Chapter of NHS recognizes those students who have established high standards of excellence in Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. Near the end of the year, inductions are held to welcome new members, reminding our students of the importance of reaching for lofty goals. NHS members engage in tutoring, service activities, and community involvement. Mrs. Martha Kinsler is currently the sponsor for this organization.
STUDENT COUNCIL
Our Student Council is now under the leadership of Mr. David Woody, who hopes to use his years of experience at PCHS to help the Council develop an appreciation for all that PC has to offer. This year's emphasis is on leadership, and the Council is learning many new ways to see themselves as leaders and take responsibility for helping to make PCHS the best it has ever been. For the past few years, Council has sponsored a Clash of the Classes competition, to get more students to participate in and cheer for our sports programs. They also lead numerous fund-raising and community service projects.
QUIZ TEAM
As always, Mrs. Frank keeps our students studying all manner of interesting information (we dare not use the word "trivia"). Our teams travel far and wide to compete with teams from other schools, and we have successfully hosted our own tournaments for several years. Mrs. Frank is now working in conjuction with Mr. Weaver to shape our team into a winning unit.
Begun in 1986 at the instigation of Kari Kovarik, this program has now involved over 700 students in researching, understanding, and portraying the attitudes and cultures of other countries. Each year, specially prepared students travel to Norfolk, Virginia to engage in a role-playing competition with about 1200 other students in an attempt to understand the workings and problems of the real United Nations. Each year, they return with special insights on international relations, diplomatic skills, and renewed confidence in their own negotiating abilities.
As part of our partnership with our local Rotary International, we have begun this organization to fulfill the goals of community service and advancement. Founded by John Smith, our club sponsors two Blood Drives each year to help the local Red Cross, and has worked on a joint project with Rotary to benefit Habitat for Humanity. It is currently under the direction of Mrs. Christi Harris.
