Tournament Second Round vs. Belpre

It was double-duty day, and our girls responded quite well.  The 7th grade game took place first, and was quite adventurous, with more total fouls being committed than points scored.  Nicole Boyle put on a strong second-half performance, finishing with a game high 7 points, and Valerie Slone knocked down 2 Second-half buckets for 4.  Whitney scored again with a nifty shot, and Lindsay Scarberry, Katlyn Richards, and Alek Delli-Gatti each got into the scoring column with foul shots.  It was, however, their tenacious defense that turned the tide, as the "quickie" line-up scurried around the floor, swiping the ball, and tipping away passes on a regular basis.
In the "big" game, our offense sputtered a bit before going wild over the final 3 Quarters.  Four starters scored in the First, but we trailed 9-10 at that point.  Then we began to cook.  Courtney pounded home 10 points in the Second, Tiffany struck for 10 in the 3rd, and well-balanced scoring secured the 4th, as we cruised home to victory.  Tiff finished with a career-high 17 points, while Courtney was close behind with 15.  Both Maggie and Lindsey tallied 6, Emma tacked on 5 more, and Natalie had a late tip-in to round out the scoring.

Though we struggled a little defensively early on (and late too, as it turned out) our offense was pretty productive (at least for the first three quarters).  We started strong, with Courtney getting 6 points inside, Lindsey striking twice from midrange, and Tiffany canning a Three, then continued the balanced attack in the 2nd, with the same three girls totalling all 10 of our points.  We exploded offensively in the 3rd, with Tiff nailing two more treys while Maggie nailed 3 jumpers, then rattled home to victory with a losing 4th Quarter.  Tiffany returned to her good form, hitting 4 of 5 Three-point attempts, and totalling 15 points to lead all scorers.  Courtney tacked on 12, with Maggie and Lindsey each contributing 6, and Joni getting her first basket of the season for our only score of the 4th Quarter.

This game gave us another opportunity to work some girls into solid playing time, and they responded pretty well.  Courtney went wild in the first half, scoring 8 in the 1st Quarter, then 8 more in the 2nd.  Emma dominated the 3rd, with 8 points, while Tiffany canned a trey and a deuce.  Otherwise, it was pretty uneventful offensively, but our substitute defenders did a good job of keeping their opponent off balance.  Courtney ended up with 16, Emma had 8, and Tiffany tallied 6.  Mollie hit one basket, Maggie had two foul shots, and Whitney scored the only bucket of the 4th Quarter by either team.

In a wild and wooly performance, our girls opened an early lead, then held on for the narrow victory.  (Though Coach Woody never had a doubt, the outcome was apparently a little too close for the comfort of some folks.)  The girls began by hitting on all cylinders, opening a 21-2 lead at the end of the first 6 minutes.  Maggie bombed in a 3-pointer and a jumper to lead the team with 5 of those points, but the scoring was balanced as usual, with Courtney, Emma, and Mollie each contributing 4 points, and Tiffany and Lindsey each cashing a deuce.  The game evened out a little in the 2nd, but not much, as Lindsey struck for 6 more, Courtney tallied 5, and Maggie hit another bomb.  Lindsey had the team's only bucket in the 3rd, as our substitution pattern failed to generate any offense at all.  Our 23-point Halftime lead shrank to 11 in that Quarter, then continued to dwindle despite Courtney's 8-point performance in the 4th.  Despite our struggles, we had the ball and the 3-point lead at the end of the game, and every girl had participated in the victory.  Courtney led the team with 17 points (including 5-5 foul shooting), while Lindsey had 10 and Maggie 8.  Emma scored 6, with Mollie striking for 4, and Tiffany (coming off her mild concussion vs. Blenny) tallied 2.

We fully expected a tough game out of the Bobcats, but perhaps not as rugged as it turned out.  With bodies hitting the floor on a regular basis, our girls stayed focused and produced another successful outing.  Maggie bombed home a Three and Courtney created two rebound baskets and 2 foul shots as we took an early (and unreliquished) lead after the First, 13-7.  With Emma providing a clinic in Box Out technique (I knew it wasn't a lost art!), Mollie and Natalie came off the bench to hit a bucket and 2 foul shots (respectively) as our lead increased to 11 at Half.  Our usual control of the 3rd Quarter did not show on this day, and we allowed the Bobcats to claw their way back within 6, while Tiffany spent time on the bench nursing her head, which had been bounced off the floor earlier.  Despite that, she returned long enough to hit two key foul shots in the 4th before sitting down for good.  Once again, good play off the bench (which was also needed, due to Maggie's foul trouble), insured the victory.  While Katlyn and Mollie gave us especially good minutes, Lindsey and Courtney maintained the offensive output necessary to keep the game beyond reach.  Courtney was the game's leading scorer with 10, but Lindsey's 9 were all vital.  Maggie's two Threes gave her 6 points, Mollie added 4, Tiffany scored 3, and Emma and Natalie each had 2.  The team learned a good lesson about intensity that they will hopefully carry into every other game this season.

With only 24 hours to rebound from our first loss, the girls were a little sluggish, but came together well to pull out the victory.  Not knowing what to expect from our opponent caused the girls to be a bit skittish, and WCC was well-drilled in a variety of offensive attacks to combat our defenses.  After a quick start, we seemed to drag, with only Lindsey and Courtney scoring in the First at 4 apiece.  Only Mollie could manage a Field Goal in the Second, when we scored only 3 points to fall behind 11-12 at Half.  As usual, the girls took responsibility for their mistakes, set their determination levels on "High" and produced a 13-2 Third that saw Maggie, Lindsey, and Tiffany each hit key Threes to widen the gap.  Tiff and Courtney combined for all of our 9 points early in the Fourth, and we held on for the win.  Courtney led all scorers with 12 points, while Lindsey had 7, Tiffany hit for 6 (two Threes), Maggie had 3, Emma had 3, and Mollie made 2.  Numerous players performed solid duty off the bench, and contributed in non-scoring ways to our successful performance.

We dropped from the unbeaten ranks in our first game back from the Christmas Break, during which we often looked as if we had forgotten how we needed to play.  To the girls' credit, they staged an amazing 4th Quarter comeback that pulled us within 3 at one point, but a few key mistakes cost us the chance to send the game into overtime.  We fell behind 4-14 after one quarter, with only 2 girls scoring for each team.  The theme was about the same in the Second, and our deficit widened to 12 at Half, with Courtney having 9 of our 10 points.  Some signs of life emerged in the Third, though we fell 2 points further off the pace, then our furious rally saw us outscore Edison 15-8 in the Fourth, with them making the final 4 points of the game on foul shots.  Maggie went wild from beyond the arc in the 2nd Half, hitting three times to lead our scorers with 11 points, followed closely by Courtney's 10.  Tiffany also hit a trey, as she and Emma each tallied 5 as our only other scorers.  5-16 Foul Shooting contributed to our struggle, but the girls once again came away with a positive attitude about their potential.

The outcome was never in doubt for long, as our girls raced out to a 15-6 First Quarter lead, insuring lots of playing time for everyone.  Sharpening a variety of defenses and getting point-production from 10 different girls, the team once again showed its balance, unselfishness, and energy.  Lindsey, Emma, and Maggie scored 4 points apiece in that quarter, with Courtney adding the other 3.  After that, the subbing started, with the game getting more "interesting" by the moment.  Natalie exploded for a career-high 8 points in the 3rd, but after that things got a bit ragged during mass line-up changes.  Natalie, Lindsey, and Emma each ended the game with 8 points, while Courtney scored 7 and Maggie added 6.  Tiffany chipped in 4 as we continued our scoring balance, and Nicole Boyle scored two.  Three 7th Graders tallied their first points: Valerie Slone and Whitney Miller each hitting a basket, and Lindsay Scarberry sinking her first ever foul shot.  Everyone on the team got at least one shot on the basket, so scoring is definitely in their future.

Not having lost a game within (at least) their last 36 outings, the Eagles are often deemed invincible around our league, but today's game proved that great effort and teamwork can still get the job done.  After falling behind 8-2 in the First Quarter, our girls got their act together, pulling even on the strength of treys from both Maggie and Lindsey.  Once again, we fell off the pace in the Second, but Maggie piled on another three-pointer, and 7 total points, as we closed within 1 at the Half.  The 3rd Quarter saw Edison pull out to yet another lead, only to have it snatched away when Maggie and Tiffany each drilled a trey, while Courtney and Lindsey each added a pair of foul shots, keeping the Edison lead at one.  In the final period, Maggie cashed one more basket, and Courtney nailed 4 consecutive (and vital) foul shots down the stretch to give us the win.  Maggie ended as the game's leading scorer with 15, with both Lindsey and Courtney scoring 7 (all of Courtney's coming on 7-8 foul -shooting).  Tiffany rounded out the scoring with 5, to carry our record to 4-0.

It's never a dull moment with this group.  The Jackson girls proved to be very quick, aggressive, and athletic, with only another balanced performance getting the job done.  We jumped out to an early lead when Maggie and Tiffany hit three buckets apiece to give us a 16-8 edge after one quarter.  Still, Jackson kept working hard, pulling closer in the Second.  Our penchant for big 3rd Quarters remained true, as the girls put up their biggest quarter of the year.  Tiffany hit 2 treys early to keep us apace with an early Jackson run, then Lindsey, Emma, and Courtney each canned two buckets to increase our lead to 12.  Katlyn Richards and Nicole Boyle each nailed a basket in the Fourth Quarter to keep us well in front, and we cruised on to victory.  Tiffany ended the game with 15 points, while Courtney totalled 13.  Lindsey had 7, and Maggie finished with 6, after spending her final 18 minutes concentrating on assisting the other girls.  Emma's 4, with Katlyn and Nicole's 2 each rounded out the scoring.

Our success continued, in a very exciting outing.  The girls had been encouraged to put as much Offensive and Defensive pressure as possible on the Bobcats, but experienced mixed results.  Trailing 8-10 after 6 minutes, our Offensive attack was still having the desired effect, creating a large number of foul situations.  By creating 6 "fouled-in-the-act" situations, our girls used improved defense to pull ahead 18-15 by Half.  Our diversity paid off in the 3rd Quarter, when Maggie (1) and Tiffany (2) tested the 3-point line and succeeded.  The tempo got hectic in the 4th, with the two teams combining for 30 points including Lindsey sending the crowd wild with a Trey that put us up by 2.  The Bobcats tied it up, but our girls maneuvered the ball well, got Courtney the inside shot, and she converted while being fouled.  We stifled their final attack and celebrated a hard-fought win.  Courtney led all scorers, with 16, including 8-11 foul shooting.  Tiffany scored 10 points on two Treys and 4 fouls shots, while Maggie and Lindsey each tallied 8 key points.  Emma hit her only two foul shots of the day to round out the scoring.

The season got off to a good start, with our team learning several valuable lessons about how to improve.  Following a sharp First Quarter (10-1) our girls got a little case of the jitters and frittered away most of the lead.  Attitudes were good at halftime, however, and a few adjustments resulted in a 17-4 quarter that put the game away.  Eight girls got into the scoring column, led by Courtney Ferguson's 15, which included several put-backs and 5 foul shots.  Tiffany Mahoney added 6 (all scored in that 3rd quarter outburst), while Maggie Boelter and Emma Romanowski both contributed 4.  Tallying one basket apiece were Natalie Spanner, Katlyn Richards, Lindsey Fasching, and Mollie Simonton.
