Combining a variety of subjects relevant to the development of successful young adults, we attempt to explore and review important concepts with those who are about to exit high school and compete in the world at large. Half of the course is an investigation into Economic theories and applications, in which we attempt to discover the principles on which our economy is based, and ways in which the students can make sound personal economic decisions. The other half of the course includes reviews of previously-learned material (Geography, Political Science, and Civics), along with a personal exploration of college readiness and individual philosophy. Students build their own textbook from notes, original source documents, and graphic organizers, and refer to McDougal/Littel’s Economics. They process information through class participation and in journals, and produce a mini-project each quarter that demonstrates their unique understanding of the subject matter. Course goals include mastery of relevant information, a demonstration of personal insight, the development of writing skills, and the advancement of critical thinking skills and personal development.
