World Cultures Course Description

World Cultures II – Grade 10 – Required – One Credit – Two Semesters – should have taken WC I

While covering civilizations, cultures, and events in the world from creation to 1900, we explore the splendid variety of governments, religions, and artifacts created by people to solve their primary obstacles to survival and growth.  With emphasis on the cradles of civilization, Greece, Rome, Medieval Europe, the era of Renaissance, Reformation, and Exploration, the Enlightenment, and the ascension of America, we have a rich historical tableau from which to draw an amazing variety of approaches to man’s essential concerns.  Students build their own textbook from notes, original source documents, and graphic organizers.  They process information through class participation and in journals, and produce a mini-project each quarter that demonstrates their unique understanding of the subject matter.  Course goals include mastery of relevant information, a demonstration of personal insight, the development of writing skills, and the advancement of critical thinking skills and personal development.
