***March 18th ~ How time flies!
Congratulations are due this morning to Teresa
Tokodi, who was named Captain of the Class A All-State Team.
Those of us who have seen Teresa play for the past 4 years in a Varsity
uniform (6 years if you count her stellar Jr. High career as well) know
all the attributes that have made her so valuable to our program.
An excellent shooter inside or outside (she won this year's 3-point
contest at the LKC Night of Champions), Teresa has also always been an
unselfish passer who always finds the open shooter. Her 15.8
point average was tops on our team, but could have been much higher if
she had been selfish. Instead, she chose to do everything she
could to help her team win, including pulling down 8.5 rebounds per
game as our team fashioned a 20-4 season record. Though the
season ended too soon, with a loss in the Semifinals to eventual Class
A Champion Wheeling Central, Teresa could take consolation in the
knowledge that she played an excellent game, doing everything she could
to help her team succeed. She will be greatly missed next season,
as she heads off to WV Weslyan for a college academic and basketball
career, but she has left a great legacy and a shining example for our
younger players to follow. Love ya, T!
Congratulations also to our other members of
the All-State Team: Junior Kyle Pugh was named to the Honorable
Mention squad, and Sophomore Maggie Boelter was selected to the Second
Team.
We also pay homage to our other two Senior
players, Andrea Tracewell and Katlyn McCollum, whose contributions to
this year's team should not be underestimated. Both young ladies
helped our team accomplish a great deal this year (and last, for that
matter), and their attitudes and joyous smiles will be greatly missed
next year.
Congratulations also to all the members of LKC and
other Catholic schools' teams (too numerous to mention here) who were
chosen to this All-State team. We are reminded again what an
excellent conference we play in, and the outstanding level of play
presented by Catholic schools across the state.
***March 7th
Despite struggling for most of the morning, your
Crusaderettes persevered over a tough South Harrison team, winning
their first-round contest at the State Tournament, 35-32. The
girls shot out to an early lead, relinquished most of it by Halftime,
then shut out the Hawks in the 3rd Quarter to take a 6-point lead
heading into the final period. Turnovers and poor shooting kept
PC on their collective heels while the Hawks spun off 11-straight
points to open the 4th, but Teresa hit a foul shot, Maggie hit a trey
and Andrea sank a basket, all within 30 seconds to put us back in the
lead. After SH made their final bucket, Teresa nailed 4
consecutive foul shots to pull out the victory. Teresa led our
team with 12 points, while Andrea added 7, Maggie and Kyle each made 6,
and Courtney scored 4 before fouling out. Our 11-38 shooting was
dismal, but the Hawks managed only 13-44, and we outrebounded them by
10. Today the girls take on Wheeling Central at 11:15 for the
right to play in tomorrow's Final game, which will occur at 2:30.
***February 25th ~ No more snow days!
The Varsity girls won the Sectional Championship
with a hard-fought victory over St. Marys on Friday night.
Despite the fact that no classes were held at any of the three schools
involved, the teams met at Ritchie County High to determine the
Sectional Title. Though our girls had an early lead, which they
maintained throughout, the scappy St. Marys squad made a valiant
comeback near the end that fell just 4 points short.
Congratulations to the Blue Devils on an excellent season, and further
congratulations to our girls, who triumphed once again. The girls
now take on Wirt County Wednesday night for the Regional title.
Game time is 7 PM at Ritchie County High School.
Meanwhile, the Varsity Boys will attempt to secure
the Sectional title, also at Ritchie County High, on Tuesday night at 7
PM.
*** February 20th
Last night our varsity Boys
played against Calhoun County. The Boys came out strong and maintained
the lead throughout the entire game with a 75-36 victory. The top
two scorers were John Padden with 14 pts. and Cole Cwyner with 14 pts.
The JV also won their game.
The Jr. High Boys weren't as fortunate
as the varsity Boys. They played Jackson and lost 59-44. Their top
two scorers were Zack Romine and Daniel Collie.
During the rest of the week we will
have students from St. Mary's (8th grade) and PCES (6th grade) coming
to tour the school. On Thursday St. Mary's will visit and on Friday
PCES will visit.
Progress reports will be sent out on Friday.
***February 6 ~ Have an enjoyable Ash Wednesday
Tonight's game between our varsity Girls and St. Marys has again been postponed.
As part of our Ash Wednesday service, our Student
Council made two presentations today. Following Father Bekeh's
timely Gospel reading reminding us to perform our Lenten duties without
thought of recompense, the Council presented Tony Vitti with a plaque
honoring Anna Lou's contributions to the school, including her donation
of numerous books to our library. That was followed by having
Tony inducted into a new organization at the school, the Classic
Crusaders Club. This club was founded by the Student Council as a
way of honoring those who have commited their time, talents, and
treasure to the improvement and advancement of Catholic schools in
Parkersburg. Tony was an excellent inaugural inductee, and we
look forward to receiving many nominations in the future for additional
members.
***January 25
Catholic Schools Week begins on Monday, and
the week is filled with exciting, interesting evidence that Catholic
Schools Light the Way. Get involved with our numerous
activities! See the schedule in lighter blue below.
Congratulations to our outstanding group of
young wrestlers. Though they are few in number, they are
exceptional in heart and determination, and have been very
successful. Under the direction of Ron Wines, the three young men
Riley Wines, Charles Schriner and Joseph Welch have represented PCHS in
fine fashion. Though the team loses most of its "matches" due to
having only 3 members when most teams have 15, the fellows have done
very well individually. Last night, Riley and Charles were
undefeated by pins in a Quadrangular with Ritchie County, Jackson, and
Blennerhassett. Joseph also executed a pin against the wrestler
from Jackson. For the next two days, they are in a tournament at
South against 15 other teams, and we wish them all the best of luck as
they fight for the old Blue and White. Great job, guys!
*** January 17 ~ Exams in full swing
As the first Semester closes, plenty of news is in the offing.
Once again, we thank Bishop Bransfield for his
assistance in improving our building. The roof is nearly
complete, and the floors are sparkling. In fact, it appears that
the cafeteria floor is soon to be replaced, as well as numerous
handrails around the building, and most doors are getting fire-marshall
approved closures. The old building is perking up daily, making
all our lives a little more enjoyable.
Upcoming schedules looked packed for the next weeks.
Tomorrow, barring snow, we will complete Exams and
dismiss at 1:37. Enjoy the long weekend, because we intend
for the second semester to begin with a bang.
The Juniors have their Breakfast on Jan. 24th,
and the Serra club will visit a day later, along with students getting
their Report Cards. The following week is Catholic Schools Week, which is jam-packed with events.
Monday will bring a visit from Louis DeAngelo ('90) to deliver our
Keynote address. Student Council will provide a pizza lunch, the
Jr. High Crusaderettes will take on #1 Vandevender, and the Boys
Varsity will play Linsley.
Tuesday we will have Mass at 11:16, dedicated to Sarah Shingleton, the
Varsity girls travel to Charleston Catholic, and the Jr. High Boys play
Blennerhassett.
Wednesday is Student Appreciation Day, featuring our rewarding Academic
Thuse (8:15 AM) which will include a visit from Kathy Spencer of the
Diocesan office for a special presentation. There will be
numerous raffle prizes and snacks. The Jr. Crusaderettes travel
to Belpre later in the day, while the Varsity Boys play St. Marys at
our school.
Thursday is Faculty, Staff, and Coaches Appreciation Day, honoring
those who serve our students. A special luncheon is planned with
a special message from Father Huffman. Then alumnus Adam Krason
('90) (about 11:55 AM) will speak to the entire school, helping us get
some closure on how Catholic schools light the way. The Varsity
Girls take on Tyler in a home game that night.
Friday is Krazy Blue & White Day, with students permitted to dress
in school spirit colors (no fleece or PJs!) for a donation of $1 to the
Matthew 25 Souper Bowl Drive, classes will be out of order
(3,1,4,2,lunch,6,5,7) and we'll then all travel to Williamstown to
watch our Varsity boys seek revenge for an earlier narrow loss.
Saturday will conclude the festivities with Student Council's 1st
Annual Chili Cookoff. Entries can be made until Jan. 25 with a
$10 fee. The Winner will receive a $100 prize and a plaque
proclaiming them the Best Chili at PCHS, second prize is $50.
Tickets to sample and judge the Chilis are $5, and may be purchased
from any Student Council member. The Varsity Girls conclude the
week with a game against Ravenswood that evening.
Our 8th Graders have been selected to participate in
a Diocesan wellness program called TREKWV. They have been issued
pedometers, and will be counting their steps while they learn the
benefits of increased exercise on their physical health.
